Absolom

This window in Bolton Priory probably depicts Absolom, the third son of king David who rebelled against him and tried to take the crown. Consequently, he lost the battle, fled into some woods and was entangled in the oak trees, whereupon the general of the army killed him. This story was read at Mass today, and reminded me of this stained glass window. Why is Absolom depicted in glass? It seems that the mourning that David expressed for Absolom was taken by the medievals as a prefigurement of the 'grief' God felt for the death of Jesus Christ, his son. There is also an inversion in that Christ was the perfectly obedient son, but Absolom was the rebellious son, thus heightening the prefigurement.
